Community Supervision leadership and staff use email alerts to track trends over time.

In 2021, Idaho launched tools that provide line staff with key metrics, like timely assessments and contacts. Idaho’s email alerts are tailored to individual officers’ caseloads, showing them how their results compare to their historical performance and to officers with similar caseloads around the state. The tool also provides staff with alerts for high-priority developments, like supervision-level mismatches, helping them to quickly course-correct, improve with feedback, and celebrate successes.

Idaho’s line staff dashboard helps officers plan their days.

The line staff dashboard is a forward-looking, actionable tool that offers insights to help probation and parole officers allocate their time on a daily basis. The tool provides a holistic overview of an officer’s caseload, automatically surfacing opportunities to address client needs, like overdue contacts, supervision-level mismatches, and earned discharge opportunities.

Population projections inform facility management and departmental policy priorities.

Idaho’s case-level population projection model forecasts incarcerated and supervised population levels over time. The microsimulation model uses patterns in historical data and sentencing information to determine how people flow through the system and to project expected changes. These projections allow for proactive facility management, reveal trends driving population changes that may inform department-level reforms, improve budget forecasting, and offer the Department of Correction a way to easily model the impact of a range of potential policy changes on its population.

What gets measured, gets managed.

Idaho began partnering with Recidiviz in early 2020, with a focus on enhancing the Idaho Department of Correction’s (IDOC) data-driven approach to improving outcomes for the community and justice-involved Idahoans. Since the beginning of the partnership, IDOC and Recidiviz have developed new tools that empower probation and parole officers to bolster the success rate for people on their caseloads. This work is already generating meaningful results. Early insights from the line staff dashboard led IDOC to correct 17% of the supervision-level mismatches surfaced within the first week.
